The Classic Fes to Marrakech Desert Tour: 3 Days via Merzouga

You'll spend your first night camped in Erg Chebbi after a sunset camel ride, then break up the long southern route with a second night around Dades or Ouarzazate, arriving fresher in Marrakech on day three instead of finishing off one exhausting drive. It's the same one-way route as our other durations, just paced properly.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1. D1

   Day 1: Fes to Merzouga via the Middle Atlas and Ziz Valley

   Pickup from your Fes accommodation early in the morning begins the drive south through Ifrane's cedar forests and the mountain town of Azrou, where wild Barbary macaques are often spotted along the roadside. Continuing over the Middle Atlas via Midelt, the route drops into the Ziz Valley, following its ribbon of palm groves down toward the desert. Arriving in Merzouga by mid-afternoon, you'll have time to settle in before camels arrive to carry you into Erg Chebbi's dunes for sunset. Dinner, campfire drumming, and a night under a genuinely dark desert sky follow at a private tented camp.

2. D2

   Day 2: Merzouga to Dades Valley via Erfoud, Rissani and Todra Gorge

   Rise early for sunrise over the dunes, ideally back out on a camel or on foot, before returning to camp for breakfast. The drive west passes through Erfoud and the old caravan town of Rissani, then follows the road toward Tinghir and the Todra Gorge, where sheer 300-meter rock walls narrow to a river-carved passage, worth getting out to walk, not just photograph from the car. From there the route continues into the Dades Valley, known for its folded, honeycombed rock formations and winding 'Road of a Thousand Kasbahs,' where you'll overnight in a hotel with valley views before the final push toward Marrakech.

   Day 3: Dades Valley to Marrakech via Ouarzazate and Ait Benhaddou

   The final day heads through Ouarzazate, Morocco's film-industry hub on the edge of the desert, before reaching Ait Benhaddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified kasbah village that appears in countless films. You'll have time to walk its narrow earthen alleys and climb toward the old granary at its summit for views over the palm-lined valley. From there the road climbs into the High Atlas Mountains over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, Morocco's highest major road crossing, with views over Berber villages terraced into the slopes. The descent into Marrakech in the afternoon ends the tour with drop-off at your accommodation, the one-way journey complete.
